A look back at ‘An Evening with Terry Waite’

May 6, 2016multifaithNews

The Multi-Faith Centre’s Annual Lecture was delivered by guest speaker Terry Waite on Wednesday 27th April 2016 to an audience of over 100 people. The 2 hour talk, supported by Derby City Council, included a book selling/signing and refreshment break.

During the lecture Terry Waite spoke about his role as Assistant for Anglican Communion Affairs for the then Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie in the 1980s. This focussed on his negotiating career in Uganda when he had to deal with General Amin for the release of individuals who had been imprisoned there, as well as later successful negotiations with Iranian Revolutionary Guards, Col Ghadaffi and Hezbollah before being captured and spending almost five years in solitary confinement from 1987 to 1991.

As well as talking about his experiences of negotiating and captivity he also spoke about the humanitarian work he has been involved in since, including starting Hostage UK where he has supported hostages and their families. He has also fully engaged in working for the homeless, overseas development and many other humanitarian activities.

Towards the end of his talk he introduced his latest book, a comic novel, entitled “The Voyage of the Golden Handshake” and discussed the importance of humour. He shared his love of study, writing lecturing and humanitarian work and gave an overall wonderfully engaging lecture. The audience left singing his praises, commenting on what an inspirational evening it had been.

Here’s just some of the feedback the event received:

“It was very good to meet the man that we have heard about for many years. It was also nice to hear a focus on the present and the future as well as his past experiences”.

“What a wonderful evening!”.

“The Multi-Faith Centre’s Annual Lecture with guest speaker Terry Waite was truly inspirational. I look forward to next years!”.

“The Annual Lecture was very good. Terry Waite was open, honest and to the point when answering questions. He is a very humble and genuine man that is good at putting people at ease”.

“It was a privilege to be in the company of a man who had endured great suffering, yet exercised great courage and remained committed to and hopeful about transforming human relationships”.

Here’s a few picture from the evening, including fantastic images by Russell Pollard…
