As we mark the significance of the current Israel and Gaza conflict that started on 7th October 2023, we, the Derby Faith Alliance, come together to acknowledge the profound pain, suffering, and loss experienced by all sides.
This day serves as a solemn reminder of the human cost of conflict and the urgent need for peace. We also remember those who remain in captivity and call for their immediate release. We also call for vital aid to reach those who are in urgent need of it.
We strongly condemn all acts of violence. Our hearts go out to all those who have been affected, and we express our deepest condolences to the families who have lost loved ones. We stand in solidarity with all communities impacted by this conflict, and we reaffirm our commitment to supporting the vulnerable and needy.
In Derby, our diverse faith communities have a long history of living peacefully and respectfully with our neighbours. We believe that our shared values of peace, respect, and compassion are far greater than any differences that may exist between us. It is crucial that we continue to engage in honest and courteous communication, keeping our dialogue open and kind.
We must not let increasing tension and violence overseas undermine the good work we do to support those in need in the city. Together, we stand up for the safety and security of all people, offering humanitarian support side by side. We support all our faith communities and seek ways to find a common voice for justice and compassion.
We are proud of the strengths of Derby’s diverse faith communities and continue to build on our legacy of peaceful coexistence. By working together, we can ensure that our city remains a beacon of hope and unity.
Where possible, we encourage reflection on October 7th rather than comment, to reflect the painful and sombre nature of this date and the continuing situation. Practically, there are several things we can do. We can:
- Be conscious of the painful nature of this date for Muslims, Jews, and Christians.
- Reach out to those we know who are affected by these troubles, offering our friendship and support.
- Be aware of any pastoral needs within the communities we serve which may emerge on this date (particularly if you are a chaplain or have an interfaith duty of care).
- Encourage reflection, and caution comment which may cause further division (noting the reasons above).
- Remain committed to combatting religious hate crime and all forms of hatred. If you witness or experience any anti-Jewish or anti-Muslim hatred, call the police on 999. Alternatively, you can notify the Community Safety Trust or Tell Mama.
